Most are based upon coordinates of real star systems. In fact,if you feed these coordinates into a 3-d "astrogator bubble" plotter program (as I've done) you'll get a pretty good (though incomplete) picture of U.F.P. space. Incidentally, Rick Sternbach (senior illustrator/designer on TNG) had a hand in Star Trek Maps (then again, he also had a hand in Star Trek Space Flight Chron- ology--the #1 biggest disaster ever, which F**A is infamous for using!). No matter, Star Trek Maps is very accurate and remains so through TOS, TAS, the movies, and TNG with both dating and coordinates. Shane Johnson (F**A infamous) "borrowed" the coordinates for his "Worlds of the Federation" book from the Intro To Navigation Manual which comes with Maps. He didn't think it was worth his time to plot out the remaining coordinates from Maps for such worlds as Cait, Klingon, Tholia etc. (not given in the Manual). He made up the numbers and they aren't anywhere NEAR the correct values. In most cases, I've found his coordinates to be in the wrong quadrant to begin with! The above coordinates are as accurate as I could come. Coordinates not extending to a tenths digit of accuracy I hand-plotted myself (so DON'T blindly rely on them for navigation purposes! You might be a few light years off!). I also don't take the responsibility for the numerous "filler" stars the authors created (or borrowed). You'll see some stars taken from nonTrek novels (Niven'sKnown Space, Pournelle's Co-Dominium, Foster's Commonwealth etc.)--probably try ing to integrate the "alternate universe" concept here... Or else they were named after these works... Those few navigational references followed by @ were taken from the Starfleet Dynamics 25th Anniversary volume (with coordinatescorrected from the Star Fleet Officers Requirements Supplement). Note that some coordinates in the Manuals are erroneous, while starbase coordinates use an entirely different grid system... Because the maps are limited to 2 dimensions per map and include only the major systems per map I was unable to include all 3 coordinates for certain entries. Star Trek Maps only covers systems discovered up to 2267 AD (the time of ST-TMP)and therefore TNG worlds aren't included. Johnson's book, on the other hand, has coordinates for some TNG star systems. I included these additional TNG worlds, but seriously doubt their accuracy. To distinguish them from others, each is followed by an asterisk (*). UFC, if you're wondering, stands for United Federation Catalog. It is a survey number assigned to less well known systems, prior to receiving proper names (if ever). As for UFP space... Federation space is divided into five major sections: 4 quadrants and a central sphere called Quadrant 0 (though not really a quadrant at all). This sphere is 90 parsecs in radius and is centered on the central nav. beacon (at coordinates 0,0,0). Quadrants 1-4 encircle the beacon and are subdivided into 8 Subquadrants (Quadrant 1 North & South, Quadrant 2 North & South etc.). They are further divided into Sectors. Star Trek Maps (and other "tech fandom" works) further state that in the time of TOS, a Constitution class heavy cruiser was assigned a Subquadrant for patrol duty, though deviationfrom the Subquadrant is not uncommon due to special assignments...which the Enterprise is famous for! Here's a table for quick reference using individual coordinate signs: Fleet Subquadrant X Y Z Starship Fleet Base Comment ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Quadrant 0 ---------------- ALL Potemkin 1 180 pc sphere Quadrant 1, Northern Sectors: + + + Intrepid 7 Principle Systems Quadrant 1, Southern Sectors: + + - Farragut 28 Antares system Quadrant 2, Northern Sectors: - + + Valiant 27 Quadrant 2, Southern Sectors: - + - Constellation 12 Rigel/Orion colonies Quadrant 3, Northern Sectors: - - + Exeter 11 Quadrant 3, Southern Sectors: - - - Enterprise 19 Largely unexplored Quadrant 4, Northern Sectors: + - + Yorktown 25 Deneb system Quadrant 4, Southern Sectors: + - - Kongo 17 Starships Constitution, Excalibur, Hood, Lexington, and Defiant are given military or defense assignments. The Republic is used as a cadet training vessel. With the loss of various Constitution class vessels, some switching around of patrol quadrants no doubt occurs... Modern "tech fandom" uses this notation frequently and it can be seen in Ships Of The Star Fleet, Starship Design, Federation Reference Series and many more. In starship status reports, for example, A3N assigned to a ship would indicate its current status as being Active in Fleet Subquadrant 3, Nothern Sectors. The (TOS) USS Enterprise normally patrols Subquadrant 3 South which borders on some very hostile space including the Klingon and Romulan Empires, the Gorn Hegemony, and Melkot space. Please be aware that these Fleet Quadrants are NOT to be confused with Galactic Quadrants in use in The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine... Galactic Quadrant nomenclature is based around splitting the entire galaxy up into Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta quadrants. Alpha and Beta represent the lower half of the explored galaxy. Gamma and Delta represent the upper half of the galaxy, opposite the core. You will find this map somewhat different than that of the Treaty Exploration Territory map in the Technical Manual. This one is much smaller, with the UFP Zone defined between Rigel, Deneb, and Antares--which is more logical than in the Tech Manual for several reasons. In "Mudd's Women" Kirk tells the Rigel XII miners that without UFP protection they might never get help "this far out. In "Encounter at Farpoint" an early log entry reveals that beyond Farpoint sta- tion (on Deneb) "lies the unexplored Galaxy". Meaning that even in TNG's time, space beyond Deneb (at the very least) has not been fully charted. Aside from this difference in scaling, the UFP Treaty Zone is very much the same as in the Technical Manual, with just a few starbase positions shuttled around. According to the Navigation Manual (and Line Officers Requirements Manual) starbases are built on or as close as possible to the galactic grid, preferably on planets for their resources. There is a logical arrangement of starbase positions, at least for the original 28 (TNG starbases number in the hundreds and no data is available, except for Starbase 74 which is located in orbit of Tarsus III). 15 starbases are located in the outlying reaches of Quadrant 0, while 13 are dispersed at logical grid locations throughout the eight largely unexplored (at the time of the original series) subquadrants. One starbase per subquadrant is designated a fleet command base. Note that starbase coordinates in Line Officer Requirements are erroneous. If you're into Star Trek gaming, I think you'll find them of particular interest. Distance between coordinates can be computed by taking the square root of: (Xd-Xp)^2 + (Yd-Yp)^2 + (Zd-Zp)^2 Where: Xd, Yd, and Zd represent "destination" coordinates Xp, Yp, and Zp represent "position" coordinates The result will be in parsecs.
